What can be said about the Honda Odyssey that hasn’t already been said? It’s the family vessel that’s in a quarter of driveways across the country. It’s got more style than you’d expect from a minivan. The HondaVAC is still an O.G. and has made quick work out of millions of stale fries and stray ponytail holders over the years.
Now, with the 2018 Odyssey finally out, the critics and staff at our Honda dealers near Coral Springs, FL, are honestly floored at how good it is. So, we guess there are some things that can still be said about this venerable Honda van.
The Redesigned 2018 Honda Odyssey is a Hit at Kelley Blue Book
The first-drive reviews for the 2018 Honda Odyssey are rolling in, and critics at KBB are seeing stars. Their unabashedly Odyssey headline: “The Best Family Car in the World.” New features and tech, “buttery smooth” driving, and the Odyssey’s combined 22 mpg fuel efficiency all combine to make this family-oriented minivan Kelley’s top pick of the American van market.
In 2018, Honda redesigned the popular Odyssey, now in its seventh model year. Kelley Blue Book notes that the new Odyssey now includes the impressive suite of Honda Sensing technologies, even at the base trim levels. Driver-assist functions and safety features include:
- Adaptive Cruise Control – Forward-facing sensors monitor the traffic ahead and adjust speed to maintain safe following distance, which the driver sets in addition to the Odyssey’s speed.
- Lane Keeping Assist – The system applies continuous small steering corrections to keep the Odyssey centered in the lane.
- Collision Mitigation Braking System – A forward-viewing camera mounted on the rearview mirror combines with forward-sensing radar to detect and avoid collisions. The system sends audio and visual alerts to the driver while applying mild braking. If the driver does not respond, full braking is activated to avoid impact.
- Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) – When driving 65 mph on South Florida’s I-95, this system detects road markings and helps you to avoid departing your lane. If the turn signal hasn’t been activated, RDM provides visual alerts to the Driver Information Interface while applying corrective steering torque. If the driver still hasn’t responded with proper corrective steering, the brakes are applied to prevent road departure.
“The Ultimate People Hauler” at Extreme Tech
The 2018 Honda Odyssey’s state-of-the-art safety tech and infotainment systems are making waves in the high-tech world too. The headline at Extreme Tech is “2018 Honda Odyssey First Drive Review: Tech Makes It the Ultimate People Hauler.” We agree wholeheartedly, as the new Odyssey leaves no stone unturned when it comes to in-vehicle entertainment.
Techies and owners alike are impressed with the Odyssey’s 4G LTE Wi-Fi and video streaming capabilities, and a smartphone interface that enables destinations to be sent from the phone to the Odyssey’s Garmin navigation system is very helpful. Parents will appreciate the rear facing CabinWatch camera and the CabinTalk PA system, which allows them to monitor the activities of “any miscreants” in the rear seats.
Outstanding Safety for a Minivan
The all-new Odyssey from Honda is one of only two minivans to be awarded a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS). It also garners a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The latest Honda van also received 4 stars in rollover crash testing and 5 stars overall, an amazing safety achievement for a vehicle in the larger minivan class, as reported by Motor Trend.
2018 Odyssey is US News and World Report’s #1 Minivan
US News and World Report put the completely redesigned 2018 Honda Odyssey up against six competing minivans, grading on 18 points of research, before awarding the #1 ranking to the Odyssey. The new 2018 Odyssey design earned an overall 9.3 out of a possible best 10 rating in performance and interior. US News cites the Odyssey’s “…improved acceleration, a long list of family-friendly technology, a cavernous interior, and an easy-to-use infotainment system” as the ultimate combination making the Honda Odyssey the “minivan to beat.”
Tech-Heavy Interior & Loads of Cargo Space
A rear-seat Blu-ray entertainment system helps keep passengers entertained and content on long trips. The new intuitive touchscreen replaces the two-screen configuration, and Apple Play and Android Auto integration are seamless, letting you take the internet and your tunes anywhere you go.
The 2018 Odyssey features 38.6 cubic feet of cargo space with all three rows of seats up, seating up to 8 adults in spacious comfort. With the convenient and very popular Magic Seats folded down, 158 cubic feet is made available behind the first row. With just the third row down, 92 cubic feet remains. That’s the “cavernous interior” US News is talking about, with room to carry surfboards, kayaks, camping gear, kids, pets and all the stuff that comes with them.
