The new 2019 Accord is certainly a car for the record books – we’ve discussed its numerous award-winning accolades in depth. But perhaps this sedan’s greatest feat is its ability to keep passengers protected. It garners a perfect 5-star NHTSA rating. It’s an IIHS Top Safety Pick. It has standard Honda Sensing. And with plenty of active and passive safety features, the redesigned Accord is undoubtedly one of the safest cars in America.
With Distracted Driving Awareness Month right around the corner, we thought it’d make sense to highlight some of the features that make this new Accord a life-saver.
Traffic Sign Recognition: How Does It Work?
Honda’s self-proclaimed “most impressive Honda ever,” the ’19 Accord comes equipped with standard Honda Sensing. This includes a Collision Mitigation Braking System, Road Departure Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, and Lane Keeping Assist.
To top it off, the new Accord also features Traffic Sign Recognition, or TSR, which acts as a driver’s know-it-all passenger. TSR works in the same way that any sensor-dependent Honda Sensing feature works: it utilizes advanced driver-assistance technology and machine learning, along with an accurate camera device, to automatically scan for and detect everything from speed limit signs to “No Entry” signs. That information is then projected to the Accord’s dashboard display or optional Head-Up Display (see below).
Head-Up Display (HUD)
To keep you free from distraction, the 2019 Accord Touring also comes standard with Honda’s premier Head-Up Display (HUD). The HUD projects important driver information—such as turn-by-turn directions, current speed, legal speed limit, incoming calls and texts, and other Honda Sensing warnings—directly within your eyesight. Because accidents can happen in fractions of a second, it’s imperative that you keep your eyes on the road. The Accord HUD makes that task easier.
Rain-Sensing Windshield Wipers
When it rains, your Accord happily keeps your vision impeccable with automatic windshield wipers. The wiper blades activate and adjust speed based on the amount of precipitation – Miami sprinkles activate the lowest setting while Florida monsoons blast the wipers at full speed. Worry not about levers; just focus on the road. Honda Accord has your back.
Blind Spot Information System
Standard on upper-level Accord models, the Blind Spot Information System, or BSIS, utilizes rear sensors to detect vehicles or objects that may be hidden on the sides of the vehicle. Warning signs are then displayed on the side-view mirrors, and an audible alert will sound off if you attempt to change lanes.
Cross Traffic Monitor
Using the same BSI System, Cross Traffic Monitor helps you avoid collisions when reversing out of parking spots or your driveway. Notifications will be sent directly to your display, indicating the direction of oncoming traffic with the multi-angle rearview camera. Audible warnings will also chime throughout the cabin.
Auto High-Beam Headlights
The Accord’s standard automatic headlamps sense traffic at night and dim the LED low-beam lights when cars approach. Once the road clears up and no other vehicles are detected, the auto-on high-beams lighten your way. It’s just one more passive safety feature that makes the Honda Accord one of the safest sedans on the market.
Smart Entry with Walkaway Auto Lock
No need to press buttons with the Accord! When you go to enter the vehicle, just touch the door handle, and the locks will disengage. The car will also automatically lock when you’re about 8 paces away (or 8 feet). Talk about simple.
Navigation with 3-D Renderings
Satellite-linked navigation is great. Satellite-linked navigation with innovative 3-D landmark rendering? That’s a whole new level of convenience. With the Accord’s navigation system, you get accurate three-dimensional representations of landmarks, buildings, and other pinpoint-able sites. Plus, the system also includes lane guidance and live search functions.
