Honda engineers, well-equipped with the industry’s finest-tooth comb, left no stone unturned when crafting the 2020 CR-V Hybrid. Honda’s latest hybrid SUV puts the excel in “excellent,” the marvel in “marvelous,” the joy in “wow, what an utterly enjoyable drive!” And with impressive fuel economy, it also quite literally goes the extra mile.
Some may call the CR-V Honda’s “best thing since sliced bread” invention. Those people should meet the all-new CR-V Hybrid, Honda’s first gas-electric SUV.
CR-V vs. CR-V Hybrid
While the 2020 CR-V and its hybrid sibling look similar, there are some slight differences. For one, the CR-V Hybrid features a unique front bumper with a duo array of 5-dotted LED fog lights, a blue Honda emblem and hybrid badging.
Inside, the best of both worlds collide. Like the gas CR-V, the hybrid model features standard and optional fare like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, a wireless phone charger, premium audio, an elegant 7.0-inch digital touchscreen, dual-zone automatic climate, heated front seats and steering wheel, a rear USB charging port, and a versatile center console with a 3-position “parcel shelf.”
Honda’s fuel-efficient CUV does add a few nice, hybrid-exclusive touches to the mix:
- A Hybrid Drive Information Interface is an upgrade to CRV’s digital cluster, allowing users to monitor hybrid powertrain performance, battery power and electric motor usage rates.
- Three shift-by-wire drive modes can be engaged: ECON, Sport and EV. Fuel economy is optimized with ECON mode, engine performance is improved in Sport mode, and EV mode enables the CR-V Hybrid to operate as an electric-only SUV.
- Steering wheel-mounted deceleration paddles are also exclusive with the hybrid model; simply engage the selectors to increase or decrease the level of regenerative braking.
Instead of the gas-powered model’s 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, every CR-V Hybrid is fitted with a 2.0-liter DOHC i-VTEC, an e-CVT transmission and a pair of electric motors. The hybrid CR-V pumps out a total of 212 horsepower* and 232 lb.-ft. of torque. Unlike rivals of the Toyota RAV4 ilk, which utilize an electric system for all-wheel-drive, the 2020 CR-V Hybrid features a standard fully mechanical AWD system – a first for any Honda hybrid. The result: A satisfying drive and a 40 city/35 highway mpg* rating (compared to CR-V’s 28 city/34 mpg*).
