Getting ready for your next big family road trip? Florida remains one of the top states for any such summer getaway, with South Florida’s Key West being a particularly great idea for a vacation destination. Oceans as far as the eye can see. Island paradises peppering the coastline. Sun, sun, and more sun. It’s really got everything a family could ask for—which is why millions of tourists visit our little neck of the woods each year.
“Sounds like fun,” you say. Well, hold your horses. One does not simply walk into
Mordor Key West, willy-nilly. It takes some effort and patience, as planning a South Florida road trip through Miami can be a grind. After all, the region offers roughly 15,000 square miles of things to do, sights (and sites) to see.
Still in? We thought so. Grab your bucket list and let’s start crossing off some items. Check out our favorite South Florida destinations for traveling families.
Plan Your Miami to Key West Itinerary
Traveling along US-1 from Miami to Key West is, by our estimation, the best scenic drive in Florida, if not the country. This ultimate Florida road trip helps you pass some truly gorgeous attractions that you’ll definitely want to add to your itinerary—and that’s before sticking your toes into the sand at any of the stunning Key West beaches.
Of course, the first leg of your coastal road trip kicks off in none other than the heart of South Florida. Although known for its remarkably electric and eclectic nightlife, Miami is also a great vacation spot for families thanks to numerous daytime attractions and things to do, like driving your Honda through Wynwood area or laying out on the beach. Hey, you even have the opportunity to pet kangaroos in Miami!
What to do
- Vizcaya Museum & Gardens
- Miami Design District
- Little Havana
- Wynwood Walls
- Zoological Wildlife Foundation
- Frost Museum of Science
- Safari Edventure
Obviously, you’ll first need a vehicle to get you out of Miami. Perhaps the full-size Honda Pilot should accompany you. It’s got a wonderful list of family-centric features, including Honda’s acclaimed CabinTalk in-car PA system, tri-zone climate control, up to eight seats, and a rear entertainment system. (Just imagine how much better your childhood road trips would have been if they took place with this mobile entertainment system.)
It’s the highlight of any South Florida trip, especially if you want to avoid the crowd. The Village of Islands, also known as the fishing capital of the planet, is ideal for anyone towing a boat. Once there, you can spend an entire weekend fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, boating, water tubing, and more.
What to do
- Theater of the Sea
- History of Diving Museum
- Founders Park
- Alligator Reef Lighthouse
- Rain Barrel Village
- Windley Key Fossil Reef
Plan on towing a boat or some jet skis? Probably a good idea, as Islamorada offers more nautical miles of fun than just about anywhere in Florida. But taking a family trip in a truck is less than ideal. Good thing there’s the Honda Passport AWD, which can tow up to 5,000 pounds without needing to dab sweat off its brow. Simply hitch, haul, and have a blast.
Past Islamorada is Marathon, FL, one of the state’s most stunning locales. Marathon spans across 13 tiny islands, offering beautiful views of the third-largest barrier reef in the world, a great and laid back beach atmosphere, luxury resorts, and access to one of the longest bridges ever designed (Seven Mile Bridge).
What to do
- Turtle Hospital
- Seven Mile Bridge
- Dolphin Research Center
- Captain Pip’s
- Sombrero Beach
- Curry Hammock State Park
Bahia Honda Key
Located at mile marker 37, Bahia Honda Key (aka. Bahia Honda State Park) is a fan-favorite destination of many South Florida tourists. It’s home to 500 acres’ worth of some of the region’s best snorkeling and beachcombing, as well as a few quiet beaches, state parks, and a serene offshore island near Big Pine Key for stargazing. You could easily plan your entire family vacation in Bahia Honda.
What to do
- Keys Boat Tours
- Calusa Beach
- Overseas Highway
- National Key Deer Refuge
- Blue Hole Spring Snorkeling
- Boondocks Miniature Golf
- Great Florida Birding Trail
Key West, FL

You can take outdoor treks through historic museums and wildlife centers, explore Duval Street without leaving your car, and camp out underneath the stars. Oh, and there are a lot of beaches in Key West, if you weren’t aware.
