We all know our beaches are out-of-this-world beautiful, but with the recent rise of red tide algae and the hordes of people bound to plant their booties in the sand this holiday season, you’d think there’d be a better place to vacation in South Florida. Luckily for tourists and residents, there are tons of other things to do in our neck of the woods. Keep sand out of the equation this Thanksgiving by vacationing at one of these other amazing South Florida hotspots.

Art Deco Historic District

One square mile. Over 800 Art Deco buildings. This gorgeously laid-out district in Miami Beach is the ideal romantic destination for couples. Walking tours run daily, with guides escorting you past each picture-perfect stucco wall. (Visitors can also take a tour in a double-decker bus if that’s how their boat floats.) Bars liven up the streets once the sun dies down, and cafes ensure there’s enough bustle in the morning to entice people out of bed.

Overall, the Art Deco district shouldn’t be missed. Expect to spend a few hours there, and be sure to keep your phone handy to snap pictures at a moment’s notice. Visit www.mdpl.org for more details, information about tours, or to view upcoming events.

Ft. Lauderdale Antique Car Museum

Fort Lauderdale’s Antique Car Museum is a great alternative to local South Florida beaches—especially for those who can’t get enough horsepower in their lives. Historical automobile memorabilia packs the 30,000-square-foot museum, as do old road signs, antique car parts, and even vintage magazines.

But the pride and joy of this South Florida car museum is its vehicles. With the country’s largest collection of Packard cars on display, the Antique Car Museum is 100% unique. Get a glimpse of the Gentlemen’s Runabout Speedster; built in 1909, this engine-powered carriage cart is worthy of its own museum. Fitted with kerosene headlights, a magnifying glass “windshield,” and four thin roadster wheels, this 20th-century car is truly a sight!

Although you won’t find many Honda vehicles in the Fort Lauderdale museum, there’s certainly something there for car-lovers to car-love. Check out the museum’s website for event details or driving directions.

Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts

Located just outside of Hollywood in Dania Beach, FL, the Wiener Museum is one of South Florida’s hidden gems. World-class ceramic artwork and pottery is the name of the game here, as Wiener continues to be the most comprehensive British ceramics museum in the U.S. So as to not be overwhelmed by the sheer number of exhibits, set aside an afternoon to fully explore both floors of the museum—you’ll thank us later.

The Wiener Museum is also one of the cheapest attractions in South Florida! Admission is just $10 per person, and there’s a free parking area across the street. So, park your Honda and explore. Head to wmoda.com for additional information.

Safari Edventure

You can’t keep a kangaroo as a pet in Florida, but you can pet a kangaroo at Miami’s hands-on Safari Edventure. Complete with five full acres of rehabilitated wildlife, this hands-on safari allows guests to get up close and personal with over 100 animal species, including ‘roos, alligators, snakes, sloths, lemurs, bats, and more. The safari’s Wolf Encounter attraction is a fan-favorite; visitors will get to rub Timber Wolf bellies as if they were a domesticated pup.

All in all, you can’t beat a visit to Safari Edventure on your next South Florida holiday vacation. Head to safariedventure.com for more details.

Miami Children’s Museum

For a vacationing day away from the sun, bring the little ones to South Florida’s finest kid-friendly destination: the Miami Children’s Museum. They’ll expend all their energy climbing Mt. MichiMu, sailing around the all-new Pirate Island, and constructing contraptions in the Construction Zone. When the day comes to an end, beaches will be the last thing on their minds. What a way to let your kids celebrate the holiday break on their own terms.
