2018 Honda Clarity PHEV
Considering becoming a proud new owner of a hybrid car or EV in Florida? Yes, prices on electric vehicles and hybrids have dropped significantly over the last few years, but buying a new green car in 2018 is still a significant, up-front financial commitment. However, with Florida EV rebates, federal tax credits, and various other statewide perks at your disposal, that new Honda Clarity PHEV is well within your budget!
Federal PHEV Tax Credit: $7,500
Fill out and mail in the federal Form 8936 (Qualified Plug-in Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit) to claim up to $7500 in tax credits for your qualifying EV purchase. To qualify for the residential government EV credit, your EV, hybrid, or PHEV must:
- Be made by the original OEM manufacturer;
- Weigh less than 14,000 pounds (GCWR);
- Have a rechargeable electric motor;
- Have a battery with at least a 4kWh capacity;
- Be purchased new (not leased) in or after 2010;
- Be primarily driven or stored in the U.S.
Federal tax credits are available for each qualifying EV until 200,000 of that particular model have been sold, at which point the credits will phase out. Luckily for you, the 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid is essentially a newborn, so you won’t have to worry about EV rebate cutoffs.
Gulf Power Florida EV Rebates: $750
Expiring at the end of 2018, these Gulf Power EV rebates are available to the first 1,000 participants to offset the costs associated with installing a home charging EV station. The offer is only available to Gulf Power residential customers in northern Florida who meet the following requirements:
- Purchased or leased a new or used plug-in vehicle or EV
- Have an itemized sales receipt as proof of purchase
- Completed an incentive application within 60 days after purchase or lease
- Do not drive a low-speed electric vehicle (under 34 mph)
- Like extra cash in their pocket
After purchasing or leasing your Honda Clarity or another plug-in vehicle, apply for the Gulf Power Electric Vehicle Charging Program online. In addition to the tax rebates, Gulf Power also offers off-peak electricity prices for EV owners to charge their cars overnight.
Jacksonville Electric Authority EV Rebates: $1,000
If you live in the Jacksonville area, JEA will give you up to $1000 for your qualifying new plug-in hybrid or pure electric vehicle, depending on its battery size and its capacity. Some “small font” items to note:
- Any received $1,000 rebate will be taxable income, resulting in a 1099 form mailed to your address come tax season.
- All rebate applications must be submitted within 60 days of EV purchase or lease.
- Applicants must be JEA residential customers.
- Rebates are limited to one per vehicle.
- Mandatory surveys are sent out periodically to all applicants.

Florida Insurance Discounts for EVs
Additionally, thanks to Florida Statute 627.06535, auto insurers cannot impose extra premiums and surcharges on your electric car. Some car insurance companies even offer savings in the form of multi-car bundles, hybrid car discounts, and alternative fuel discounts. Ka-ching! That’s some nice extra dough in your pocket, especially adding to the fact that charging your EV costs less than the equivalent of $1 per gallon of fuel. You could be saving more than $1,000 on fuel just by going green!
