The Great American Road Trip is a time-honored tradition. There’s the convenience store snacks, the roadside photo ops, the singalongs, the memories created, and so much more.

Traveling may look a little different this year, but things will return to normal soon, and really, there’s probably never been a better time to take a road trip. It’s an excellent and affordable way to see the country’s diverse landscapes. You can map out of every aspect of your trip to see as much or as little as you’d like, and you can make itinerary changes at a moment’s notice if you want (or simply travel without one!). All you need are a few free days, a reliable vehicle, and an idea of which direction you want to head first.

Honda makes several vehicles that are road trip-ready, each offering a slew of convenient family-friendly features, the newest advanced safety technology, and great fuel economy. Read on to see which one best suits your needs and then start planning your road trip — that is, when it’s safe to do so.

2020 HR-V

The Honda HR-V may have a small footprint, but you’d never know it based on its interior. Its 24.3 cubic feet of cargo space is best-in-class, but its versatility is where the HR-V truly shines. Thanks to the 60/40-split second-row Honda Magic Seat®, the seats can flip completely up or down, creating a number of clever and useful storage configurations. The HR-V is also available with all-wheel drive and gets 28 mpg* in the city, 34 mpg* on the highway.

2020 CR-V

Honda completely redesigned its flagship SUV for 2020. A 1.5-liter turbocharged engine is now standard, along with Honda Sensing®, a suite of driver-assist features including blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and automated emergency braking. The IIHS also awarded the 2020 CR-V as a 2020 Top Safety Pick*. Drivers will love the combined 30 mpg*, as well as the handy flip-down conversation mirror to keep tabs on what’s going on in the back seat.

2020 CR-V Hybrid

Along with its redesign of the gas-model CR-V, Honda unveiled a hybrid version. The gas-electric hybrid drivetrain gets approximately 38 mpg* and it comes with standard all-wheel-drive capability, making it an excellent choice for any road trip. A digital gauge cluster and touchscreen display provide drivers critical battery and power flow information at a glance, while multiple drive modes allow you to be sure the 2020 hybrid CR-V is driving optimally for current conditions.

2020 Passport

The mid-size 2020 Passport has a powerful V-6 powertrain and comes with available all-wheel drive. Drivers can expect to achieve a combined 22 mpg*, excellent fuel economy for this class. All-season tires are standard and the Passport can tow up to 5,000 pounds. Inside, base models get a 5-inch infotainment system and there’s an available 8-inch with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability. The NHTSA* awarded the Passport a five-out-of-five in crashworthiness, keeping you and your family safe.

2020 Pilot

The full-size, three-row 2020 Honda Pilot makes an excellent road trip vehicle. It has a ton of cargo space, seating for up to eight, and best-in-class fuel economy. All-wheel-drive models get 19 mpg* in the city and 27 mpg* on the highway. Drivers and passengers alike will love the 16 cup holders, cleverly-designed storage cubbies, and available features like an in-cabin PA system and heated front seats. Honda Sensing® safety features come standard on all Pilots built after June 2019.

2020 Odyssey

The 2020 Odyssey was seemingly created just for road tripping. Its cabin is quiet, the ride is smooth, the large seats are comfortable, and there are numerous premium features that make driving more enjoyable for both the driver and passengers. Versatile Magic Slide® seats, a built-in vacuum, and a wireless charger are all standard. The available rear entertainment system offers several family-friendly features, including an interactive “How much further?” app. It gets a combined 22 mpg* and can even tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.
