Honda innovation is fueling the future of automobile with a new generation of hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles that can take you further than ever before. Your Honda dealers in South Florida are excited at the possibility of our products helping the U.S. secure a new level of energy independence from fossil fuels.

According to the 2016 Clean Cities Vehicle Buyer’s Guide, available through www.afdc.energy.gov, America is weaning itself off of its dependence on oil. The article states that use of alternative-fuel technologies such as biodiesel, hybrids, plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles has more than doubled and is at its highest level since 1954.

The publication also states that “Alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicle sales are expected to increase and a greener future is well within grasp. Mounting consumer acceptance, the increasing availability of vehicle models from OEMs, and expanding fueling infrastructure, have all played a significant role in the development of this market. State and federal incentives, consumer desire for more fuel-efficient, cleaner forms of transportation, and interest in lower operational costs are also helping to drive this growth.”

Honda began the journey toward the future of alternative-fuel vehicles with the remarkable 2000 Honda Insight, the first gasoline-electric vehicle ever sold in the United States. The original Insight acted as a real-world engineering laboratory for the development of a new generation of fuel-saving technologies. The fruit of this endeavor can be seen in Honda’s lineup of efficient vehicles with advanced Honda fuel technology. Some notable examples of these include the Honda Accord Hybrid, the Honda Civic Hybrid and Civic HF, and the Honda Fit.

The 2015 Accord Hybrid, for example, allows you to select three different driving modes to maximize fuel efficiency: EV Drive, Hybrid Drive, and Engine Drive. As the names imply, the energy sources range from full electric mode, a combination of the electric and gas engine, and pure gasoline engine power for better highway efficiency. Honda’s forward-thinking 2.0-liter, 16-valve i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine works in concert with an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery. This results in an EPA-estimated 50 mpg city/45 mpg highway.

Similarly, the Civic Hybrid uses a 1.5-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine and Honda’s exclusive Integrated Motor Assist® (IMA) to deliver added power when needed. The vehicle can even be driven on pure electric power for brief periods. The Honda Fit hatchback features Eco Assist™ that helps train you to drive in a more fuel-efficient manner. An “ECON” button on the dash shifts the engine’s performance to improve fuel economy even further.

But the big news from Honda is its research into groundbreaking alternative-fuel vehicles. Certainly the most exciting development is Honda’s research into fuel-cell vehicles such as the new 2016 Honda Clarity FCV, coming soon to a South Florida Honda Dealer near you. The Clarity, and vehicles like it, uses the most abundant element in the universe – hydrogen – to generate electric energy with zero emissions. FCVs such as the Clarity have up to a 300-mile driving range and can be fueled in under 5 minutes at a growing number of hydrogen fueling stations across the country.

The heart of Honda’s FCV technology is a specialized fuel cell that efficiently converts stored hydrogen to electric energy on demand. A small battery converts kinetic energy into electrical energy when the vehicle decelerates or brakes, adding additional power to the equation.

Another area where Honda is taking a leadership position is in the development of advanced all-electric vehicles that run on high-capacity Lithium-ion batteries. Honda is actively researching how to improve battery performance and longevity to increase reliability and range.

Whether it’s a hybrid gasoline/electric, plug-in hybrid, or cutting-edge hydrogen-fueled vehicle, Honda is fueling the future of automotive technology driving a cleaner, more sustainable tomorrow.
