That online offer does not include interest rate, financing terms, trade-in value, warranty, and other factors that you typically negotiate face to face with a sales consultant. Myth #2: Buy during a Holiday or Rainy Day
The premise behind this myth is that since dealer lots are empty on holidays or when the weather is terrible, sellers will be more motivated to make a deal. Unfortunately, everybody else who believes in that truism shows up on those days making the car lots crowded, which reduces your chances of getting a deal. The least crowded times to visit a dealer are on the weekdays from nine to five because potential buyers are at work. As for deals, you’ll find them during the end of the month when dealers are trying to meet quotas, at the end of a model year because dealers want to focus on new and not old models, and before a car is discontinued or redesigned because the demand for an existing version will be low.
Myth #3: Buy Now, or the Deal is Gone
This might work when you’re selling fresh vegetables, antiques, or precious stones, but unless you’re after a rare automobile or one in short supply, you’ll be able to find similar deals not only from the same dealer but from other sellers tomorrow or next week. So shop around and if you’re not getting a good deal, walk away and try some other time or at some other dealer.
Myth #4: Cash is Always Better
Paying cash is generally a good idea when you’re buying retail items from a private individual or a mom-and-pop shop because the sellers don’t have to deal with the fees imposed by credit cards. However, dealerships generally get incentives from manufacturers to lease or finance your vehicle, allowing them to make more money. They may also offer discounted interest rates that you may not be able to get from outside financial sources like your credit. Before agreeing on any deal, find out what kind of financing terms your dealer offers compared to what you can get elsewhere and pick the one that makes the most sense for your budget.
Myth #5: You Must Service Your Vehicle Where You Bought It
Most of the cars that go into a dealer’s service department do not come from that dealer’s sales floor. The service department brings much money into the dealership, so they’re interested in servicing as many vehicles as possible no matter where they were purchased. So buy your car at a place where you can get the most value for your money, even if it’s far away.
