Time your trip to the dealership just right, and you could be looking at thousands of dollars in savings. Unfortunately, it’s not likely that you’re a fortune teller, so you’re probably asking yourself: “when exactly is the right time to shop for a new car?” Or “how do I go about getting the best finance rate or car lease deal?” Or “how should I secure a good price if I’m socially awkward and too shy to talk to people?”

Buy at the End of the Month

The most common piece of advice you’ll get from dealers is to buy a new car toward the end of the month.

Why? Because dealers like our Miami Honda dealerships have sales goals that must be met. At the month’s end, if any vehicle model is overstocked, dealerships may lower prices or offer premium lease deals to attract buyers. (Yes, it’s true that accomplishing these goals means bonuses for our dealer employees, but don’t hold that against us.)

That said, you may not get the best pricing at the end of the month if your local dealership has already met their quota. A good rule of thumb is to browse their online selection for the most popular models and see if there is an abundance of unsold vehicles that need to be moved. If so, you may be in luck—negotiation time!

Aim for the End of the Day

The end of the month is old news. Really, the best car prices can be had by taking advantage of the minute’s hand on the clock.

Toward the end of a particularly stressful day, salespeople may be all too ready to punch their clock and head home. That’s your chance to strike and strike fast. If you utilize this tactic, be prepared to ask questions and haggle, haggle, haggle. Even a few hundred dollars taken off the sticker price is money in the bank. 

Shop by the Quarter

By quarter, we, of course, mean the measurement used to section out the year, not the George Washington-emblazoned coin.

A trip to the car dealership in March, June, September, or December usually makes sense if you aren’t in need of a vehicle right away, and it can net you some good deals, too. As new models join the inventory, dealers work to push the previous model year off the lot by lowering prices drastically or offering an exclusive lease special.

The key here is strategizing your plan of attack. Stay informed of release dates. Read car reviews. Keep track of your local car dealer’s inventory, paying close attention to how many models they have available. For instance, if the 2019 Honda Odyssey is set to be released in June of 2018, you should look at shopping for the 2018 Odyssey around then.

Take Advantage of Holiday Deals

We’ve been in the game long enough to know that some of the best Honda deals come up around the holidays—in particular: Labor Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Happy Honda Days (Christmas season and New Year’s).
