Towing your family around South Florida or across the country? Sure, any minivan will offer you the space, convenience, and comfort needed to keep everyone happy-ish, but that doesn’t mean it has the capacity to also keep everyone safe.
Enter, the 2019 Honda Odyssey, an IIHS Top Safety Pick carryover. As the only minivan to earn top crashworthiness ratings in 8 of 9 categories, the new Odyssey beat perennial rivals like the Chrysler Pacifica and Toyota Sienna—and it did so fairly handily.
Small Overlap Front Protection
With regards to Small Overlap Front Protection ratings, “the Toyota Sienna is the worst of the bunch,” says David Zuby, Executive VP for IIHS. “[During tests], the safety cage collapsed [and] we also measured possibly injurious forces on the dummy’s right thigh and right leg.”
Compared to the other two top minivans in the country, the Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Pacifica, the Sienna is clearly lagging behind, which is apparent from its “Marginal” IIHS rating. Even the Pacifica and its “Acceptable” Passenger-Side Protection grade can’t compete with the Odyssey’s “Good” ranking.
LATCH Ease Of Use
Here’s what separates the big boys from the pretenders. The new Honda Odyssey offers the most convenient and simple-to-use LATCH anchors in the class, allowing you to snap and go with just about any child car seat or booster seat.
“Lower anchors in the second row are easy to access,” says Zuby, adding, “the top tether anchor is easy to find, and the third row has two seat positions that earn an “Acceptable” ease of use rating.” Overall, the 2018 and 2019 Odyssey received an astounding “Good+” rating for Child Seat Anchors Ease of Use.
The Chrysler Pacifica mustered a “Marginal” rating in this same category thanks to LATCH anchors that are deep in the seats and difficult to pinpoint.
The Sienna received an “Acceptable” grade due to standard, deep anchors, making child car seat installation a sweaty task.
2019 Honda Odyssey Safety Features
Every new 2019 Honda Odyssey EX features Honda Sensing, a suite of advanced safety systems that enable you to confidently tote the family around town. Honda Sensing includes the following standard features:
- Collision Mitigation Braking System
- Road Departure Mitigation System
- Forward Collision Warning
- Lane Departure Warning
- Lane Keeping Assist
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Monitor
The most noteworthy Odyssey safety features may be Blind Spot Monitoring and Adaptive Cruise Control. Blind Spot Monitoring keeps an eye on, well, your blind spots. Adaptive Cruise Control paces your Odyssey along with the flow of traffic, not just at a set speed. The Pacifica lacks standard blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. The Sienna doesn’t include adaptive cruise control and only offers blind-spot monitoring in a package.
